In Burkina Faso, the Minister Delegate in charge of Animal Resources, has inaugurated a state-of-the-art poultry complex, named Société de nutrition agroalimentaire, in the commune of Komsilga. Situated on a 2-hectare site in the locality of Bassemyam, this establishment represents a substantial investment totaling $2.4 million. The complex has various facilities, including a poultry farm, an animal feed manufacturing unit boasting a production capacity of 75 tonnes per day, and a high-technology slaughterhouse capable of processing two hundred and fifty poultry heads per hour. Additionally, there are plans to allocate $5.7 million for the next phase of the facility’s development. This investment aligns with the government’s objectives to enhance poultry production and consumption as part of its Agropastoral and Fisheries Offensive program implemented from 2023 to 2025.

In the poultry industry in Burkina Faso, the poultry industry currently contributes 6% to the agricultural GDP. Poultry accounted for 50 percent of the national livestock population in 2022, which stood at over 70.5 million animals. This investment comes at a crucial time as the poultry industry has recently experienced challenges, including an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu in Ouagadougou, resulting in the deaths of four hundred forty-one birds out of a flock totaling six hundred forty-one. The most recent previous outbreak registered with the World Organisation for Animal Health occurred at an egg farm in December 2021, affecting a premises housing one hundred fifty thousand hens, located in the Central region.
