Brookfield Infrastructure, Canadian infrastructure investment unit of investment firm Brookfield Asset Management, has paid $1.1 billion for U.S. telecommunications to technology company AT&T's colocation data centre operations and assets.

Brookfield Infrastructure funded the acquisition via $50 million credit from a revolving credit facility and $5 million cash on hand.

AT&T will use the funds to pay down debt after its acquisitions of U.S. direct broadcast satellite service provider DirecTV and Time Warner.

Following the close of the deal, Brookfield now owns 18 data centres in the U.S. and another 13 across the globe as well as a subsidiary, Evoque Data Center Solutions, to manage the facilities.
