Collahuasi, Chilean copper mining company, announced plans to pump in $3.2 billion investment to increase production at its open pit operation in northern Chile.

With the expansion plan, the facility will produce 210,000 measurement tons per day (mt/d) from around 160,000 mt/d via the installation of a fifth ball mill, an extra crushing capacity and floatation cells.

Further, Collahuasi plans to develop a desalination plant to reduce pressure on local water supplies at its mine.

Collahuasi said that the mine will produce more than 700,000 measurement tons per year of copper in concentrate and cathode at its full capacity.
