German supermarket chain operator Aldi will invest about $1.9 billion to remodel and expand more than 1,300 stores in Galesburg by the end of 2020.

Aldi said the project is part of a $12.5 million investment to update stores in the Davenport-Rock Island-Moline area by the end of 2019.

Aldi, part of ALDI Einkauf GmbH, is also adding stores with a goal of growing from its current 1,800 stores to 2,500 stores by 2022.

The project, which started its expansion in November, has added stores of about 1,200 square feet, five employees, and some 300 new items.
