Indian mobile network operator Reliance Jio Infocomm, a subsidiary company of Reliance Industries (RIL), aims to invest 1,000 crore rupees ($142 million) in a state-of-the-art greenfield data center in Kolkata’s upcoming 100-acre IT hub.

Jio has already put in an application to the state government for 40 acres of prime land on long-term lease basis for setting up the proposed data center at the upcoming technology hub in the city’s eastern fringes.

The data center project is a reaffirmation of Reliance’s expectation in Bengal, and it will be Jio’s contribution towards the goal of digitizing West Bengal.

Previously, RIL invested as much as $709.7 million in West Bengal to bolster the telecom arm’s operations, its digital ecosystem as well as the group’s retail and fuel retail businesses.
