Indonesian coal mining company PT Bukit Asam will set up a joint venture (JV) with gold miner PT Aneka Tambang to construct steam and diesel power plants in East Halmahera, North Maluku.

The JV intends to inject about $350 million to develop a steam power plant and a diesel-fueled plant, both to a supply of electricity to PT Aneka’s ferronickel factory in East Halmahera.

The joint venture, which is carrying out feasibility studies, expects the power plants to begin operations by 2023.

Recently, Bukit Asam inked a $2.7 billion deal with energy company Pertamina to build a plant in Peranap regency, Riau Islands and another coal gasification project with fertilizer producer Pupuk Indonesia to build a $3.1 billion plant in Tanjung Enim.
