Irish Water, a water utility company, and Mayo County Council have opened a new 9 million euros ($10.2 million) wastewater treatment plant in Belmullet.

The new wastewater treatment plant, together with a new treated water outfall into Blacksod Bay, will bring benefits to the town and surrounding areas in terms of health, environmental protection and improved water quality for all.

The deal will ensure Belmullet can retain its position as a tourism hub in addition to providing the capacity for future economic development and will benefit over 1,000 local people and visitors to the town and provide the capacity to treat wastewater for a population of up to 2,500 people.

The new plant will ensure that wastewater is treated and discharged in compliance with the Urban Wastewater Treatment Regulations 2001 and conditions as set out in the Environmental Protection Agency’s wastewater discharge licence. Irish Water is also investing a further $21.6 million in sewerage schemes in Killala, Foxford and Charlestown.
