Kenya Power and Lighting Co (KPLC) plans to invest 258 million Kenyan Shillings ($2 million) over three years to promote electric vehicle (EV) adoption in the country. The investment includes establishing charging stations nationwide and acquiring EVs and motorbikes for company use. To kickstart the initiative, Kenya Power launched an EV charging station at its Stima Plaza headquarters, costing $48,327. The station features a 50 kilowatt (kW) direct current charger with a one-hour charging time and a 22 kW alternating current charger with a two-hour charging time, marking the second EV charging facility owned by KPLC after the Ruaraka Depot station.

The utility aims to install nine more stations by July at various offices across Kenya and allocate an annual budget of $148,698 to expand the charging infrastructure further. Additionally, Kenya Power introduced two electric heavy-duty vehicles worth $133,829 for operational purposes, with plans to acquire more EVs and electric motorcycles by year-end.
