Dutch oil and gas major Shell and U.S.-based rival Exxon Mobil plan to invest $1.5 billion in recycling projects to tackle plastic production over five years.

Shell will build a plant in Pennsylvania to churn out 1.6 million tons of polyethene (PET), a plastic used to make drinks and food containers.

Furthermore, Exxon Mobil is also constructing a new production line at its plastics plant in Mont Belvieu, Texas to produce more than 2.5 million tonnes a year of PET plastic each year.

Further, the companies said that the new plants will spew out vast quantities tons of new plastic packaging.
