Siemens Canada Ltd., a unit of German engineering to electronics company Siemens, electrical utility company New Brunswick Power (NBP) and rival Nova Scotia Power (NSP) union have announced plans to develop a new joint pilot project in Ottawa.

The union will invest approximately $92.7 million in the project, dubbed Smart Grid Atlantic, to enhance the sustainability and efficiency of grid technology on the East Coast.

The partnership will receive about $35.66 million in funding towards the pilot project from Ottawa, which will create 241 highly skilled jobs in Atlantic Canada.

Siemens said that the partners will carry out research and test how the grid can optimize the integration of renewables, ensure stability and manage distribution to underserved communities and reduce electricity costs for consumers.
