South African mining company Anglo American Platinum Ltd. has opened a platinum smelter facility located at the company's Unki Mine in Zimbabwe.

The smelter will be used primarily to produce a furnace matte which is crushed on site and transported to the Anglo American Platinum Converter process facility in Rustenburg for further processing.

With a total investment of $62 million, the smelter will increase Anglo American’s metal processing capacity and also help create jobs as well as improve the country's economy.

Additionally, the smelting plant will also cut down on the amount of platinum group metals concentrate being exported.
