South Africa's Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has announced the commercial close of the first two projects under the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) Bid Window 6. These projects, Virginia Solar Park and Doornhoek PV, will collectively add 360MW to the national grid upon completion, representing a 4.9 billion South African rands ($265.6 million) investment with 49 percent South African entity participation. The projects are expected to generate over two thousand job opportunities and allocate $21 million to various development initiatives over a twenty-year lifespan.

The REIPPPP has been pivotal in South Africa's energy landscape, facilitating the development of ninety-five projects contributing 7,336 megawatts (MW) to the national grid. Bid Window 6 aims to add 11,318MW, with challenges such as grid access and project inter-dependencies being addressed collaboratively by the Department, IPP Office, and Eskom. This milestone signifies progress in South Africa's renewable energy journey.
