U.S. energy integration and development company Acadia Energy Corp. intends to construct an up to $33 million indoor hydroponic farm and energy complex in a former paper mill on the Black River, Mississippi.

The company plans to repurpose the 100,000-square-foot mill for a vertical farm, which would occupy only 10,000 square feet, and a microgrid.

Acadia Energy said it expects to grow produce like tomatoes, lettuce and arugula in bins of 7 to 15 feet with rotating trays. The microgrid is expected to produce electricity and thermal energy using natural gas.

The company has already secured preliminary commitments from banks to finance the overall project, which would include about $3.5 million for the farm and $20 million to $30 million for the energy complex.
