U.S.-based electricity utility holding company Alliant Energy has received the nod by Wisconsin regulators to construct a 150 megawatt (MW) wind farm in northern Iowa, Midwestern U.S.

Alliant Energy said that Kossuth Wind Project, which will cost about $255 million, is expected to save ratepayers about $81 million over its 30-year lifespan to enhance and stabilize electric bills.

The Kossuth wind farm is designed to enable a 100-megawatt expansion and will produce about 616,000 megawatt-hours of electricity each year, enough to power about 70,000 average Wisconsin households.

Alliant Energy expects to cut carbon emissions by 80 percent and phase out coal-fired generation by 2050. Additionally, the company will invest $700 million natural gas plant near Beloit to begin operation in 2020, adding another 725 megawatts of fossil fuel capacity.
