Chinese hydropower engineering and construction company Sinohydro is expanding Hwange Thermal Power Station (HTPS) units, 7 and 8, with an investment of $1.2 billion.

Located in Zimbabwe, the project, which has so far created 400 direct jobs for locals, with the figure expected to hit 3 000 next year, is 10 percent complete.

The HTPS project is expected to add 600 megawatts to the national grid. The first unit, Unit 7, will be commissioned in October 2021.

The procurement processes of the main equipment have been completed and the manufacturers have started production in China. Sinohydro expects to have completed construction in 42 months.
