U.S. freight railroad network company BNSF Railway Co. plans to invest about $135 million in Illinois for its 2019 capital expenditure program.

Most of this year’s plan in Illinois targets maintenance projects to ensure that the company continues to operate a safe and reliable rail network.

The bulk of the investment in Illinois will be for replacing and renovating rail, rail ties and ballast, which are the main components for the tracks on which the company’s trains operate.

This year, the maintenance program in the state includes around 810 miles of track surfacing and or undercutting work and the replacement of close to 25 miles of rail and nearly 50,000 ties.
